French Dog Breeds

European nations are known to have been domesticating dogs early in history, serving as a crucial part of their gradual domestication. Despite being known for their culture, cuisine, and architecture, the French have a reputation for treating their dogs like royalty. French dog breeds are some of the oldest in the world. Many of today’s popular dog breeds originated in France and are widely used as pets.

Basset Hound

Basset hounds were popular among French aristocrats to be used as small hunting dogs because their short legs allowed for their noses to be close to the ground. Hence, their name, “Basset,” is derived from the French word for “low,” “bas.” These dogs are known for being friendly and low-energy pets. They are food motivated and often weigh between 40 to 65 pounds. They can easily become overweight which is why diet and regular exercise is important for their health.

French Bulldog

French bulldogs have become increasingly popular and are cited as one of the most desired dog breeds. They were originally bred in France using Toy bulldogs imported from England and other local French breeds. Due to their squished faces, French bulldogs are often prone to respiratory issues and are more sensitive to heat. Their most notable features include their bat-like ears and their short muscular build.

Great Pyrenee

Great Pyrenees were bred to guard livestock against wolves in the mountainous region between France and Spain. They have now evolved to become more common as companions to man, but they are often still used as herding dogs. This large dog can range between 85 to 150 pounds, varying greatly depending on gender. Their thick white coat leads to heavy shedding throughout the year. They are known to be very gentle and loyal pets.

Papillon

Papillons were bred during the Renaissance period to serve as companion dogs for wealthy women. These little dogs have a lot of energy, are known for being loud and playful, and are often seen in dog competitions. Their most notable features include their silky fur and their ears, which are described to have a butterfly-like shape. They are commonly used as lap dogs as they only weigh between 6 to 10 pounds on average.

Poodle

Though the poodle originated from Germany, it is the national dog of France. Poodles are referred to as “Caniche” which translates to “duck dog” in French. Poodles are a type of water dog, divided into 3 separate categories: Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle. They were originally used to hunt ducks and to perform in French circuses, but are now commonly used as show dogs. The famous “poodle haircut” originated because their fur often slows them down when they swim. Poodles need to be groomed regularly in order to prevent matting on their fur.
