Les DOM-TOMs is an acronym referring to the Départements et Territoires d'Outre-Mer, which are France's overseas departments and territories. They consist of two main categories:

  1. DOMs (Départements d'Outre-Mer): These are overseas departments fully integrated into France, with the same legal status as regions in mainland France. Examples include Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion, Mayotte, and French Guiana. They are considered part of the European Union.

  2. TOMs (Territoires d'Outre-Mer): These territories have a more autonomous status and include places like French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna, and New Caledonia. These areas have more self-governance and their relationship with France varies.

Historically, these regions reflect France's colonial past and global maritime empire. Today, they represent a unique blend of French and local cultures, contributing to the diversity of the Francophonie while facing unique socio-economic challenges due to their geographic isolation from mainland France.
